Califa Vejer in the Lonely Planet 2020 guide
- THE JARDÍN DEL CALIFA, CORREDERA 55, CALIFA TAPAS, PLAZA 18 AND LA CASA DEL CALIFA FEATURED IN THE LONELY PLANET BEST IN TRAVEL 2020 CAMPAIGN.
It was one of the news of the year, the prestigious travel guide Lonely Planet sets its sights on the province of Cadiz as a must-see destination for 2020.
According to the newspaper La Voz de Cádiz, "it was one of the ten best regions, highlighting its nature and revering its gastronomic strength".
Now, in a report on the best white villages in Cádiz, we find Vejer as "a treasure to be discovered". This is what we can read:
"Magic floats in the air of beautiful white Vejer on a rocky cliff 30 miles southeast of Cadiz. Like its countryside villages 'on the border', it emanates historical fascination and a tangible Arab influence. The original stone gates and walls from the 15th century appear through the tangled old town, presided over by the restored 10th or 11th century Moorish castle and the Church of Divino Salvador, an architectural marriage of 14th century Mudejar and 16th century Gothic art.

Near the Plaza de España and its palm trees is the 18th century Casa del Mayorazgo with its flowery courtyards and its old watchtower. After a short drive you reach Los Caños de Meca, El Palmar and Zahara de los Atunes, with the wide, golden, and also windy, beaches of the Costa de la Luz.

But Vejer is also a little known gastronomic destination and the haven of boutique hotels in Andalusia. It's a good idea to visit the cleverly refurbished Mercado de Abastos for sherry and tapas that are both classic and creative; savour expert Moroccan-Andalusian cuisine in the labyrinthine El Jardín del Califa; and taste local ingredients in original seasonal concoctions in Corredera 55. It's also possible to improve your culinary skills with the Annie B's Spanish Kitchen cooking tours and cooking classes.
